Hueco Tanks

I have always heard a lot of good things about the climbing in Hueco Tanks, so after getting an invite from my old roommate Caleb, I loaded up and headed south for a Thanksgiving climbing trip.  The bouldering was every bit as good as advertised.

Here is a short video from our trip.

We had 4 days to spend in the park, but due to really bad weather (and tired muscles) we climbed for 3 days and squeezed in a rest day trip to Carlsbad Caverns.  The Hueco Rock Ranch was a great place to stay, with a cool group of climbers from all over the world to hang out with in the evenings around the campfire.  The Rock Ranch was in the process of renovating things while we were there, and as a result things were a bit less organized than usual.  It turned out great though, with nice weather for the campfire every night and a great potluck dinner on Thanksgiving.  Who knew a bunch of climbing dirtbags could cook?

If you are wanting to get into the park but don’t have reservations or a volunteer tour lined up, a good option is to check out the Wagonwheel Coop. http://www.wagonwheelcoopt.com/index.php . They have some really great guides so you can spend more time climbing and less time looking for specific routes.
